Under FIVE MINUTES? Ok I'm exaggerating a little, but, take a look at this 5 minute freeze frame video to see how two guys, working from a set of My Boat Plans plywood boat plans construct a dinghy in their own garage, then go for a sail... [video url="http://boatplansv.com/wp-content/plugins/gvideositemap/upload/video_file/1326381848plywoodboatplans.mp4" height="480" width="640" se_title="Plywood Boat Plans" se_desc="Build your own boat from these plywood boat plans" thumb="http://boatplansv.com/wp-content/plugins/gvideositemap/upload/thumb/1326381849build2.jpg"] Pretty impressive, I think you'll agree. And I think you'll also agree that it's the sort of simple project that anyone with a little DIY experience could easily undertake. If you know how to cut, plane and glue wood, then, working from a set of plywood boat plans is likely to present no difficulty to you.
If you're interested in building your own boat, particularly if it's your first project of this sort, then I'd definitely recommend plywood as the way to go. Plywood is light, strong and easy to work with. It's essential that you work with marine grade plywood, of course. Marine ply is made with special adhesives and is impregnated with anti-fungal agents in order to make it less susceptible to rot than ordinary plywood. And, with the plywood boat plans I'm going to tell you about, you'll be on the water before you know it!

So where do you get these plywood boat plans?

plywood boat plansOver past few decades, all sorts of sailing and boating magazines have published plans to enable you to build your own plywood boat. Some of these plywood boat plans have become classics over the years because of their ease of build and great performance, such as the Flying Fisherman, an 11 1/2 ft outboard utility boat, or the Flight, a speedy 19 1/2 ft outboard runabout cruiser. Others were duds and never achieved any great popularity. Often this was due to complexity of design; as with many things simplicity is the key to success with plywood boat plans.
Now, thanks to Martin Reid, a veteran boatbuilder and Member of the American Boatbuilders Association, a collection of over 500 (five hundred eighteen to be exact) of these boat plans, including dozens of plywood boat plans, is now available as a digital download!

Simplicity is all!

Take a look at the image on the left. This is an example of the type of plywood boat plans you'll be getting; Martin had ensured that only craft with complete build information are included in the package. Nothing is more frustrating than getting halfway through a project, only to find that a crucial piece of information is missing. This is a perfect example of the type of plywood boat plans that go on to be a major success, the plans are clear and easy to follow, the craft itself is simple and robust and, if you've watched the video above, you'll have seen how quick and straightforward it is to build. Not only will you get hours of enjoyment from sailing it, but you'll get an enormous amount of enjoyment and satisfaction from the process of building it with your own hands.

What's in the My Boat Plans Package?

  • Well, there are the five hundred eighteen plans that I've already mentioned.  And they're subdivided into the following categories, just to make it a little easier to find the type of boat you're interested in: Cabin Cruisers, Canoes, Dinghys, Dorys, Duck boats, Houseboats, Hydros, Jon boats, Kayaks, Small Boats, Runabouts Inboard, Paddle Boats, Paddle wheel, Fishing boats, Runabouts Outboard, Row boats, Sail boats, Ski boats, Skiffs, Sloops, Submarines!!!!, Surf boards, Utility boats, Yachts, Wooden boats. Not all these craft are suitable for construction in plywood of course, but a good proportion of them are and you'll not be stuck for a design to investigate in a little more depth.
  • Next comes a superb collection of forty professionally made videos that provide all sorts of 'how-to's and construction hints and tips that will guide you through all aspects of your boatbuilding project.
  • A wealth of color photographs, illustrations and diagrams to provide visual backup where words don't always do the job.
This set of plywood boat plans is a great resource for anyone interested in building their own boat and will provide you with a whole range of designs that will suit your level of skill and experience as you progress through your boat building career.

So is working with plywood boat plans as easy as they say?

If you're an amateur, then plywood should be your material of choice. It's one of the least expensive and easiest-to-use of construction materials. It's a material that most do-it-yourselfers are used to using in a variety of other contexts around the home. Plywood is also, on a weight by weight basis, stronger than steel sheet. And as a result of its high strength to weight ratio, building a boat from plywood gives you a boat that is considerably lighter and is likely to outperform a fiberglass boat or the same dimensions. With proper preparation and coating, plywood can be every bit as durable and as low maintenance as any other material.

You won't need any special tools, although you will need a large number of C-clamps, and most plywood boats can be built with the selection of tools that you are likely to have in your home workshop. You'll also find that no complicated woodworking procedures, such as steam bending, are ever required; construction usually takes the form of cutting and glueing to existing formers..

And it's not just D-I-Y'ers that can get a lot out of building from plywood boat plans. Plywood boat plans are frequently used in schools, colleges and community projects. Plywood boats are simple to build and the material lends itself to cooperative efforts, because, if the sheets are large, then often several people, working together, might be required. That's why youth groups, boy scouts and sea scouts have all used plywood boat plans as part of their teaching programs. Building a small boat from plywood boat plans like this is a perfect introduction of sailing and to boat construction.
